Education and Training

Welcome to the Marine Medical College which hosts the Ship Master's Medical Certificate. The following is a brief synopsis of the course:

 

MARINE MEDICAL PHILOSOPHY

To maintain a broadly based system of 20 lectures for marine personnel who may have - to provide emergency medical care and support where health care professionals are not available.

 

HUMAN BODY

The course will provide lectures on normal physiology and anatomy of the human body.

 

PERSON IN CRISIS

is to be considered after: Injury, family, personal and other crises such as drugs and alcohol. Advice on patient counselling will be discussed.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT

Drowning, diabetes, cardiac, respiratory (asthma, smoke and gas inhalation), unconscious patient (stroke, cerebral haemorrhage, unknown causes) haemorrhage (miscarriage, nose bleeds, internal bleeding), food poisoning, other poisoning, infectious diseases (venereal, aids, viral bacterial, fungal), obstetrical (foetal), gynecological.

 

MEDICAL SUPERVISION

Ongoing medical treatments already prescribed ashore... acute/chronic. Also potential drug interactions.

 

EMERGENCY SURGICAL TREATMENT

Shock ..Description, diagnosis and treatment - head, hand & crush injuries, perforating injuries, fractures, joint injuries, back injuries, the acute abdomen (appendicitis, hernias, obstruction, perforation, peritonitis & dental emergencies.

GENERAL NURSING PROCEDURES

  1. Care of the patients
  2. Care of the unconscious patient
  3. Isolation and barrier nursing
  4. Nursing procedures

 

MENTAL ILLNESS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF TREATMENT

On going medication of the psychotic patient. Emergency sedation of the psychotic patient. The management of stress and related pressures which may be associated with ship board life.

 

PREVENTIVE REGIMES

Health management techniques including physical and mental assessment of personnel which includes lifestyle, diet & leisure activities. The general epidemiological principles of analysis of disease by sex, age, demographic and socio-economic cohorts shall be explored.
